Bikur Cholim Youth Corps

PROGRAM OUTLINE:

A community-wide youth program run and organized by the students, under the guidance and supervision of trained educators and healthcare professionals. The program will include hospital visitations, Bikur Cholim workshops, and special holiday events, all developed and executed by the students themselves. The Hebrew Academy of West Queens has successfully organized this program for the past four years at Coler-Goldwater hospital on Roosevelt Island. The benefit to both students and residents has been remarkable. We would like to expand our success on Roosevelt Island to include other health facilities and more Yeshivot.

OBJECTIVE:

1) involves students in the needs of the community-at-large

2) addresses the whole student, not just academically, but also character building

3) develops the students' ability to put other's needs before their own

4 ) trains student not to stigmatize disabled people and look for real person behind disability

5) encourages students to interact with diverse population groups

6 ) introduce s students to a vast array of career opportunities in the healthcare field

7) develops personal relationships between students and patients/residents
